TAIPEI, Taiwan, Computex 2005, May 31, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors, today announced its second generation of NetLink™ Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) controllers based on the PCI Express® bus architecture that have been designed specifically for consumer and small-to-medium sized business (SMB) personal computers. With this announcement, the NetLink controller family now supports PCI and PCI Express while achieving a price-performance ratio that is unmatched in the industry. As a result, leading OEMs and ODMs have collaborated closely with Broadcom to drive PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet network performance to consumer and SMB PC applications.
Through Broadcom's collaboration with strategic partners, the new PCI Express-based NetLink controller has received widespread market acceptance. OEM and ODM designs utilizing this new technology include DESKPOWER PCs from Fujitsu, and motherboards from ECS, Gigabyte, Foxconn, MSI, Quanta, Shuttle and Uniwill.
Packed with enterprise features and performance, the new single-chip NetLink controller enables extremely low power consumption (required for today's consumer and SMB markets) and unmatched reliability and product stability. Based on seven generations of field-proven Broadcom media access controller (MAC) technology, the new PCI Express GbE controller will be available in retail PCs and from major notebook and desktop motherboard manufacturers in time for the 2005 holiday shopping season.
Announced today is the Broadcom® NetLink BCM5789 Gigabit Ethernet controller with PCI Express functionality, enabling SMB and consumer networks to achieve the performance delivered by current and future generations of personal computers. The new BCM5789 is pin compatible with Broadcom's PCI- based BCM5788 GbE controller, providing the flexibility of incorporating either PCI or PCI Express bus architectures on the same desktop, notebook or small form factor PC design.
"The field-proven PCI Express interface in our NetLink GbE controller family directly addresses the increasing disparity between today's PC performance and PCI Gigabit Ethernet network performance," said Greg Young, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's High-Speed Controller Business Unit. "As a result, Broadcom's new family of NetLink controllers provides superior performance that will accelerate the adoption of our GbE network technology into the SMB and consumer markets."
"As a leading vendor of motherboards, our success has been achieved through our intense focus on product quality," said Chris Wang, A.V.P. of Product Management Division for Gigabyte. "When we needed a high-speed controller for our flagship line of motherboards, we looked to Broadcom's NetLink GbE controllers, which complement our strategy perfectly in providing unmatched quality and performance."
"Today's PCs are utilizing more multimedia functions than ever before including pictures, home movies, music and more. Our motherboards need to be equipped with the right technology to address these PC usage patterns," said Charles Chiang, Vice President of R&D and PM of MSI. "At MSI, we're starting to transition all of our motherboards to high-speed Gigabit Ethernet to address this multimedia need and believe that Broadcom is the right supplier and NetLink is the right line of products."
Broadcom addressed the demand for PCI Express network solutions by creating the industry's first line of PCI Express GbE controllers with the NetXtreme® BCM5751, BCM5751M and BCM5721. The company continues to be a leading provider of PCI Express-based networking and storage solutions. The new NetLink controller family complements Broadcom's Gigabit Ethernet networking product portfolio that includes switching solutions, security processors, transceivers, and integrated controllers for servers, workstations, desktops and mobile PCs, providing the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of Gigabit Ethernet solutions. Broadcom's Gigabit Ethernet solutions are the most widely deployed and field-proven in the industry.
