New Broadcom® PoE Technology Delivers 15.4 and 37 Watts Per Port, Supporting IEEE 802.3af-Compliant and Emerging High Power Applications such as Video Phones, Enterprise Access Points, Residential Gateways/Routers, Surveillance Cameras, Retail Point-of-Sale Readers and Security Card Scanners
LAS VEGAS, Interop 2007, May 22, 2007 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced its first Power over Ethernet (PoE) products featuring two highly integrated power sourcing equipment (PSE) controllers. The new 4-port PoE controllers provide power to networked devices in enterprise, small-to-medium-sized business (SMB) or residential environments using the Ethernet cable infrastructure that is already in place for transferring voice, video and data. Broadcom® PoE solutions consolidate triple-play capabilities with power across a standard Ethernet infrastructure to simplify network designs, reduce maintenance and, in turn, save time, cost and resources.
Power over Ethernet is a LAN technology that provides DC power over twisted pair Ethernet cables to powered devices (PDs) within enterprise, SMB or home networks. Originally developed to power IP telephones, the approved IEEE 802.3af standard enables scalable and manageable delivery of 15 watts to Voice over IP (VoIP) and wireless access points in locations where AC power outlets are absent or inconvenient. The IEEE 802.3at Task Force is developing specifications for increased wattage (over the 802.3af standard), while pre-IEEE802.3at solutions are now powering new generations of networked-attached devices, such as video phones, surveillance cameras, residential gateways/routers, retail point-of-sale readers and security card scanners, that require higher power to operate.
The widespread adoption of telephony and wireless technologies that rely on Power over Ethernet has driven PoE port growth to about 50% per year beginning in 2005, according to Dell'Oro market research. As outlined in the firm's 5-Year Ethernet Forecast Summary (published in January 2007), "PoE shipments will grow from 32 million ports in 2006 to 145 million ports in 2011, with annual growth rates of over 30%." Dell'Oro anticipates that "IP phones will remain the big driver of PoE switch deployments, though devices such as enterprise-class wireless LAN access points, security cameras and badge scanners will also drive deployments."
"Power over Ethernet is a natural evolution for Broadcom given that we can utilize our successful physical layer device knowledge and expertise, while continuing to develop solutions that power other Broadcom products such as multimedia IP phones, next generation wireless access points, cable modems and DSL equipment," said Nariman Yousefi, a Vice President and General Manager in Broadcom's Enterprise Networking Group. "PoE is also an additional component of Broadcom's strong and complete Ethernet platform of switches, PHYs, processors and solutions that enable our customers to rapidly develop fully tested products based on field proven Broadcom technologies."
Announced today are the Broadcom BCM59101 and BCM59103 Power over Ethernet PSE controllers that feature the industry's highest integration and enhanced power per port versus any competitive PoE solution currently available. The BCM59101 (IEEE802.3af-compliant) and the BCM59103 (pre-IEEE802.3at) controllers provide a highly integrated, single-chip design that results in 30% fewer components and easier PCB layout than any competitive products. The BCM59103 goes beyond the original IEEE802.3af specification to provide 37 watts per port, for higher powered wireless, video and security technologies.
"We are very pleased to be working with Broadcom in addressing enterprise network power requirements for new and emerging technologies," said Sam Liang, Chairman and CEO of Delta Networks, Inc. "By providing more than 30 watts per port to network-attached devices, Broadcom's new PoE controllers fulfill the demand for emerging applications that require high power."
"Broadcom's reputation of integrating its silicon with cutting-edge features and functionality has made it a very attractive partner to work with on PoE technology," said Tim Kang, CTO of Alpha Networks Inc. "Through this high level of integration, they have eliminated the need for a number of external components, reducing bill of materials (BOM) and system costs dramatically, while resulting in easier and simpler product designs."
"Using Broadcom's new PoE products, IT departments will save time, cost and resources when powering devices over Ethernet in an enterprise network," said Samuel Chang, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Network Infrastructure Business Group, Accton Technology Corporation. "Broadcom's single-chip PoE solutions are pin compatible with each other, providing 802.3af-compliant features with a drop-in option that supports a range of high power devices. Their unique and differentiated features, coupled with high integration, enable us to use smaller footprints and fewer external components for high density PoE designs."
Technical Information
Broadcom's new PoE product family includes the BCM59101 and the BCM59103 PSE controllers. The BCM59101 is the industry's most highly integrated, 4-port IEEE802.3af-compliant PoE device, delivering 15.4 watts per port, while the BCM59103 is the industry's first and most highly integrated, 4-port pre-IEEE802.3at PoE device. The BCM59101 and BCM59103 are pin compatible, enabling OEMs to adopt the BCM59101 as a cost effective, baseline 802.3af-compliant solution. For applications that require higher power, the BCM59103 can be dropped into the BCM59101 footprint to provide 37 watts per port, expanding the applications for Ethernet switches by enhancing the wattage available for such high power applications as 802.11n wireless access points, video and security technologies.
Broadcom's new Power over Ethernet controllers offer unique features that set it apart from the competition, including integrated power MOSFETS, a highly efficient DC-to-DC controller, AC disconnect and LED control circuitry. Additionally, these PoE controllers eliminate the power-hungry sensing resistors previously required on each port, resulting in the industry's best thermal performance for the total PoE subsystem. The integrated microcontroller unit (MCU) in both the BCM59101 and BCM59103 allows dynamic power management and addresses L2 classification and other timing control requirements.
The BCM59101 and BCM59103 are each manufactured in a robust, high voltage silicon process technology from Broadcom's technology partner AMI Semiconductor (AMIS), which provides customers in the automotive, medical, industrial, military/aerospace and communications markets with optimal high voltage process semiconductor solutions.
